Half an hour before the doorbell rings. The table is set, the pillows are fluffed, clean towels are hanging in the bathroom. Anything left?
Yes: the smell of the house. You are the last one to notice it. A nose gets used to the smell it lives in within a few minutes and stops registering it. The guest at the door picks up yesterday's fish, the dog's cushion and the shoe cabinet in the first breath.
How can I tell what my own home smells like?
Go outside. A trip to the store and back is enough; what you smell in the first second after opening the door is what your guest will smell. In that moment, check which room it is coming from. Once you know the source, the job gets smaller.

In what order do you get ready before guests arrive?
- Cook the strong-smelling dishes a day ahead; don't leave frying or fish for the last hour.
- In the morning, open windows on opposite sides and air out the whole house.
- Take out the trash. Wipe and dry the kitchen and bathroom bins.
- Run plenty of water down the sink and shower drains; a drain that is rarely used dries out and gives off odor.

The spray is water-based; you can use it on any surface that water does not harm. On water-sensitive fabrics and surfaces (unfinished or untreated wood, silk, leather, electronics, etc.), test on a small hidden area first.

Why isn't a room spray enough?
Perfume sits on top of the odor. It feels fine for the first ten minutes, then it mixes with the cooking smell and the air turns heavier than either one alone. If one of your guests is sensitive to fragrance, you find out at the table.

What changes if you have a cat or a dog?
