July, three in the afternoon. The air conditioning is running, the windows are shut, and the dog is stretched out on the cool hardwood. An hour later someone walks in from outside and pauses at the door.
You don't notice it; a nose gets used to the smell it lives in. But the odor is there, and it is stronger than in winter.
Why is cat and dog odor more noticeable in summer?
It is plain physics: as air warms up, odor molecules move faster and more of them mix into the air. Humidity keeps them hanging there. The same cushion goes unnoticed in January and fills the room in August.
The season adds its own load. Shedding picks up, the skin produces more oil, and the ammonia odor from the litter box rises much faster in the heat.
How do you remove odor without opening a window while the AC is on?
In winter the fix is obvious: you open a window. In summer, the moment you do, hot humid air pours in and the air conditioner runs for nothing. That is why the odor builds up in a closed room.

What order should you follow on hot days?

Why does cat litter smell faster in summer?
The ammonia in urine mixes into the air faster in the heat. Scooping every other day gets you by in winter. In summer it does not. Scoop the box every day, and wash the box itself from time to time.
