You scooped this morning. By evening the hallway smells like the litter box again.
The pet aisle has a whole shelf of answers: scented litter, powders, filters, cartridges. A few of them remove the odor. Most cover it.
What causes litter box odor?
The urea in cat urine breaks down in the litter and releases ammonia. Sulfur compounds from feces join in. So the smell is a set of real molecules moving through the air of your home.
So ask one question of any product: does it deal with those molecules, or put another scent on top?

Do scented litter and deodorizing powders work?
For a day or two. By day three you have ammonia plus lavender, which is worse than ammonia alone.
The bigger problem is on the cat's side. A cat's sense of smell is far sharper than ours, and a heavily scented box can drive it away. Some cats start going on the carpet instead.
Are carbon filters enough?
The idea is sound: the odor is held, not covered. The catch is capacity. When the pores are full the filter quietly stops, and you find out when the room smells again.

How do you set it up at home?
- Keep the basics going. Scoop every day and wash the box once a week with warm, soapy water.

- Use the spray for late days. Shake well, then spray the air and the area around the box. It also goes on the cat bed and the carrier. Let it dry. Never spray the cat.
