Short answer
A burnt smell is not just smoke. It is the grease and carbon particles carried by soot, and they do not stay in the air; they stick to curtains and walls. What you do in the first ten minutes decides how bad it gets: take the burnt pan out to the balcony, turn on the range hood, and open two facing windows to get a draft going. After that, wipe the counter and the stove, go over sooty surfaces with warm soapy water, and treat the fabrics with an odor eliminator that does not mask the smell. Boiling lemon does not remove the odor. It adds another one on top.

What we recommend for a burnt smell
ODORGO Odor Eliminator Spray 250 ml for the fabrics the smell has settled into, such as curtains, sofas and carpets; ODORGO Odor Eliminator Gel 250 g for a fixed spot in the kitchen.
Spray 250 ml — Add to Cart Gel 250 g — Add to CartI was cooking chickpeas. I forgot to turn the heat down and looked at my phone, and fifteen minutes later the smell from the kitchen, not a sound, told me. The bottom of the pot had turned to charcoal. I grabbed it, put it out on the balcony, opened the windows and breathed out. It turned out that was not the end of it.
The next morning, when I sat down on the living room sofa, the smell was still there. In the living room, not the kitchen. That is the sneaky part of a burnt smell: while you think you have removed the source, it has already moved into the fabric.
Why Does a Burnt Smell Settle In So Fast?
A burnt smell is not pure smoke. Burning food, grease or plastic releases grease droplets and micron-sized carbon particles into the air. They do not stay airborne; they stick to the first cool surface they meet. Curtains, sofa fabric, carpet, wallpaper, cabinet doors. This is why airing the house never clears the smell completely: you change the air, the odor waits on the surface, and it spreads again as the room warms up.
It is also stubborn because it is grease-based. Dry dust can be shaken off. Greasy soot holds on to the surface. So with a burnt smell, cleaning and odor removal are two separate jobs, and you need both.
What Should You Do in the First Ten Minutes?
The first few minutes largely determine how far the smell settles into the house. In order: take the burnt pan or tray out of the kitchen (balcony, terrace, garden), run the range hood on its highest setting, then close the kitchen door and open two facing windows. If you leave the door open, the draft carries the smell into the living room. Air the kitchen for fifteen minutes even if the smoke alarm did not go off.
- Do not put the burnt pan in the sink and pour water over it; hot grease and steam spread the smell everywhere. Let the pan cool, then soak it.
- If something burned in the oven, do not open the door straight away. Switch the oven off, wait five minutes, then open it a crack. Opening it suddenly releases a cloud of soot into the room.
- Do not run the air conditioner or a fan. You will carry the soot into the filter and the ducts, and the smell will keep coming back for months.
- Gather the curtains and keep them away from the window. A curtain hanging in front of an open window catches the soot on its way out.

How Do You Get a Settled Burnt Smell Out of the House?
If the smell has reached the living room, there are three jobs to do in order: remove the source and the soot residue, change the air, and treat the surface the odor is holding on to. Do them out of order and you carry the smell back onto surfaces you have already cleaned.
- Get the burnt material out of the house. If you threw the charred food in the trash, that bag has to go out the same day too.
- Wipe off the soot residue. Around the stove, the counter, the cabinet doors, the wall above the stove. Use a white cloth. If the cloth turns yellow there is soot, so keep going until a clean cloth comes away clean.
- Wash the range hood filter. That filter pulls in most of the soot given off while the food burns. If it is not washed, it blows the smell back into the room every time you switch it on.
- Open two facing windows. Fifteen minutes is enough. A single window only stirs the air around; it does not push it out.
- Treat the fabrics. Curtains, sofa, carpet, tablecloth: use ODORGO Spray from 25-30 cm away. Do not soak them, a light dampness is enough.
- Leave the gel in the kitchen. Open the jar and pick a spot in the kitchen where it will sit level: the back of the counter or the top of a cabinet. If it sits at an angle, the thin layer of liquid on top seeps over the edge, so do not lay it on its side.
- Check again the next day. A greasy soot smell fades on the first day and can come back on the second when the room warms up. Give the remaining spot a second application.
What Changes with the Source: Pot, Oven, Toaster
What burned determines how long the smell stays. Vegetables or pulses burnt in a pot are the mildest case and are usually gone in a day. When meat or dairy burns, the protein smell is sharper and lasts longer. Burnt grease produces the most soot, and you will not get rid of the smell without wiping the surfaces. If plastic or an electrical part burned, it is a different matter: that smell is sharp and long-lived, and the appliance itself may be faulty.
- Food burned onto the bottom of the pot: Empty the pot, put a finger's depth of water and a dessert spoon of baking soda in the bottom and boil it, then scrub once it is lukewarm. Air the kitchen and wipe the counter, and that is enough.
- Food or dripping grease burned in the oven: Once the oven has cooled, wipe the interior, the tray and the racks. Leave the oven door ajar. The smell may come back the next couple of times you cook; that is grease residue that was not wiped off.
- Toaster or sandwich maker: Unplug it and empty the crumb tray. The crumbs burn again with every use and keep producing the smell.
- Smell of plastic, cable or an electrical appliance: Unplug the appliance and have it checked by an authorized service. This is a safety problem, not an odor problem. Deal with the electrical or fire hazard before you apply any odor eliminator.
Stove, Fireplace and Candles: What to Do About a Soot Smell
A soot smell belongs to the same family as a burnt smell, but its source is ongoing. If the chimney draft on a stove or fireplace is weak, soot pushes back into the room. The black smoke that rises when you put out a candle does the same thing on a small scale. The fix is mechanical first: have the chimney cleaned, check the stove's door gasket, and put candles out with a lid or by pressing down the wick, not by blowing. For a soot smell that has already settled into the room, surface cleaning plus treating the fabrics works the same way.
Boiling Lemon, Baking Soda, Vinegar: How Well Do They Work?
The three things most often suggested for a burnt smell do different jobs. Boiling lemon or cinnamon does not remove the odor; it adds a stronger smell on top, and because the steam raises the humidity, it can make it easier for the soot smell to hold on to fabric. Baking soda does some good when it is sprinkled on a surface and vacuumed up, not when it sits in a bowl. A bowl of vinegar mostly distracts you with its own smell.
| What people try | What it does | Where it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Boiling lemon, cinnamon or cloves | Adds another smell on top, raises humidity | Does not remove the odor |
| Vinegar or baking soda in a bowl | A bowl sitting in the room has very little effect | Almost no effect |
| Baking soda sprinkled on the carpet | Holds some of the odor on the surface | Carpets, rugs (as long as it is vacuumed up) |
| Hanging a wet towel | Catches some of the particles in the air | A small help in the first hours |
| Room spray | Masks; once it fades the smell comes back | Making a room with no odor smell nice |
| Odor eliminator | Binds the odor molecule and neutralizes it | Fabric, carpet, counter, the kitchen in general |
We have set out the difference between masking and removing, and what each of these terms means, one by one on the Odor Glossary page (in Turkish).
How I Use ODORGO on a Burnt Smell
ODORGO's formula, built on plant-derived essential oils (pine needle, anise, clove, cedarwood and lime), does not cover the smell up; it attaches to the burnt-odor molecule and binds it. Odor removal performance measured in an independent laboratory is up to 98% (Spray BT-2025-005189, Gel BT-2025-005190). It is free from dyes, fragrance, sulfates, parabens, phthalates and alcohol.
For a burnt smell I use all three together. I lift the soot layer with wiping water that has Multi-Purpose Odor Eliminator Liquid added to it, I apply the Spray to the curtains and the sofa, and I leave a Gel standing open in the kitchen for a week. The gel earns its place here because a burnt smell does not end in one go. A little more is released each time the room warms up, and a gel that stays put meets that release.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get rid of smoke odor that has settled into the house?
Wipe the soot residue off the surfaces first, then cross-ventilate, and finish by applying an odor eliminator to the fabrics the smell is clinging to. Airing the house on its own will not clear a greasy soot smell.
How do you get rid of the smell of food that stuck to the bottom of the pot?
Empty the pot, put a finger's depth of water and a dessert spoon of baking soda in the bottom and bring it to a boil, then scrub once it has cooled to lukewarm. Cross-ventilate the kitchen for fifteen minutes and wipe the counter. If the smell has reached the living room, treat the curtains and the sofa as well.
How do you get rid of the smell of burnt meat?
When meat or dairy burns, the smell is sharper and lasts longer. Take the burnt pan out of the house, wipe the grease spatter around the stove, and if it burned in the oven, clean the inside once it has cooled. Fabric surfaces may need a second application on the second day.
How many days does a burnt smell last?
A light pot burn is gone in a day. A grease or meat burn lasts more than a week if the surfaces are not wiped. If you wipe the surfaces and treat the fabrics, it is over the same day.
How do you get rid of a soot smell in a room?
Deal with the source first: the chimney draft, the stove gasket, or the way you put out candles. Then wipe the soot marks on the walls and ceiling with warm soapy water and apply an odor eliminator to fabric surfaces.
I keep smelling something burning but nothing in the house is burning. What should I do?
First check appliances, sockets and wiring for a real source. If there is none and only you notice the smell, it is not a room odor problem; see a doctor instead of using an odor eliminator.
Can I get the burnt smell out of curtains without washing them?
Yes. With the curtain still hanging, mist it lightly with ODORGO Spray from 25-30 cm away and open the window; it does not stain. If soot has visibly settled on the curtain, it needs washing first.
A Burnt Pot Doesn't Have to Mean a Smelly House
Everyone has a pot story. The difference is in what you do over the next half hour: getting the pan outside, closing the door and cross-ventilating, wiping off the soot residue, and treating the fabrics. Our chickpeas were forgotten just like that, but when guests came over the following evening, nobody noticed a thing.
