Short answer: A heavy odor at home is not a cloud hanging in the air; it is odor molecules holding on to curtains, sofas, carpets and wall paint. That is why opening a window thins the smell for a few hours and it is back by evening. The order that lasts is this: find and remove the source, wipe hard surfaces with a damp cloth, treat textiles and soft surfaces with an odor eliminator, and air the rooms last. ODORGO works at the third step: it does not push the odor down, it binds to the odor molecule and leaves it odorless.
First, a caution: If the source could be gas, something burning or an unknown chemical, air the place at once and leave; if you suspect gas, call your gas emergency line (187 in Turkey). The rest is for ordinary household odors.

Last winter a friend asked me to look at the apartment she was about to move into. When the door opened we both paused: a heavy, sweetish smell. The place was empty and cleaned, and the windows had been open for two days.

The smell had not aired out, because the odor was not in the air.

In the lab, my first question about a sample is where the molecule holds on. At home it is the same: which surface is this odor sitting on? In that apartment it was the old adhesive under the wallpaper and the inside of a kitchen cabinet.

Why does a heavy odor keep coming back?

Odor molecules are small, volatile, and most are drawn to oils. Porous surfaces soak them up like a sponge. Opening a window changes the air, but the molecule on the surface stays and moves back into the air when the temperature rises. So when the heating comes on or the sun hits the wall, the odor seems to return. It never left. Your nose also adapts within 15-20 minutes, so test by staying out for two hours and walking back in.

What do you do room by room?

What is the right order?

  1. Find and remove the source: trash, a filter, a drain, a forgotten container, a damp corner.
  2. Wipe hard surfaces with a damp cloth. Dry dusting does not pick up odor.
  3. Apply odor eliminator to carpet, curtains, sofa and mattress, until the surface is lightly damp.
  4. Put gel in closed spaces. In closets, drawers and pantries, ODORGO Odor Eliminator Gel 250 g works while it stands flat and still; it is used for up to 30 days in enclosed areas of up to 15 m².
  5. Air the rooms last, with a cross draft for 20-30 minutes. Done first, airing only dilutes the odor.

The spray is water-based; you can use it on any surface that water does not harm. On water-sensitive fabrics and surfaces (unfinished or untreated wood, silk, leather, electronics, etc.), test on a small hidden area first.

Do vinegar, baking soda and coffee work?

Baking soda holds some acidic odors and helps with small ones. Vinegar neutralizes some basic odors such as ammonia, but its own smell is strong. Coffee grounds only mask. None of them changes the odor molecule chemically, so they fail on heavy, settled odor.

What does ODORGO do here?

ODORGO is a water-based odor eliminator built on plant-derived essential oils (pine needle, anise, clove, cedarwood and lime). It attracts the odor molecule, binds to it and turns it into an odorless structure. This plant-based technology is rooted in research at Delaware State University in the USA. For the spray and the gel, that means up to 98% odor elimination effectiveness.

The fragrance-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, dye-free, sulfate-free, and alcohol-free claims are verified by tests conducted at laboratories accredited by TÜRKAK (Turkish Accreditation Agency) and ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation).

For mop and wiping water there is ODORGO Multi-Purpose Odor Eliminator Liquid 500 ml (15 mL per 1 liter of water), and ODORGO Pocket Odor Eliminator Spray 30 ml covers shoes and the car. ODORGO is not a room perfume and not a cleaning product; it only removes odor, after your cleaner has done its part. Its light plant scent fades fast and nothing scented is left behind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a heavy odor at home go away with airing alone?

No. Airing changes the air in the room but leaves the odor molecule on the surface.

How many days until I see a result?

A light kitchen odor goes the same day. Cigarette odor settled into a sofa takes 2-3 applications over a few days; with dampness, the moisture has to be fixed first.

Can I spray it directly on carpet and upholstery?

Yes. Spray from 12-16 inches (30-40 cm) until the surface is lightly damp and leave it to dry.

Does ODORGO get rid of a moldy smell?

It removes the musty odor; it does not act on the mold itself. Clean up the moisture and the mold source first.

Can it be used with children and pets at home?

Follow the use and storage warnings on the label. It is not food: do not drink, eat or swallow it, and if it is swallowed call poison control (114 in Turkey) and see a doctor.
