Last Friday evening I pan-fried anchovies. Lid on the pan, range hood on full, window cracked open. The next morning the smell was waiting for me in the living room, in the corner where the sofa sits. My mother-in-law was due that afternoon.
After fifteen years of lab work on odor molecules, I admit it stung. I had chased the odor out of the air when it had already settled into the fabric.
Why is fish smell so stubborn?
The molecule behind it is trimethylamine. As fish sits, the trimethylamine oxide in its tissue turns into this basic, volatile molecule. Hot oil droplets carry it through the air, and it sticks wherever the oil cools.
Lemon and vinegar work because acid binds a base. They only work where the acid touches: on your hands, yes; on a sofa two meters away, no.
What should you do in each spot?
| Where | What to do | ODORGO product |
|---|---|---|
| Curtains, sofa, carpet, tablecloth | Spray the fabric from 25-30 cm | Odor Eliminator Spray 250 ml |
| The kitchen in general | Leave the jar open on a fixed, flat spot | Odor Eliminator Gel 250 g |
| Countertop, stove area, cutting board | Add 15 mL per 1 liter to the wiping water | Multi-Purpose Odor Eliminator Liquid 500 ml |
| Fish container, trash can | Wash or empty it, then spray the inside | Odor Eliminator Spray 250 ml |
| Hands, dish sponge | Lemon or vinegar; replace the sponge | — |
Can you reduce the smell before cooking?
Yes, and it costs almost nothing. Half an hour in salted water, then ten minutes in lemon water, moves part of the trimethylamine into the water. Pat the fish dry; wet fish spatters more oil, and every droplet carries the smell farther.
Can you keep the smell in the kitchen while cooking?
Partly. Close the kitchen door and open the window so the smell moves outdoors.
- Wash the hood filter in the dishwasher once a month; a greasy filter has lost half its pull.
- In the oven, wrap the fish in parchment; oil on the oven walls smells through the next three meals.
How do you get fish smell out of the house?
Work in this order, or you carry odor back onto a clean surface.
- Take heads, guts and bones out of the house the same day; odor passes through even a tied bag.
- Wipe the oil film off the countertop and stove with ODORGO Multi-Purpose Odor Eliminator Liquid 500 ml in the water.
- Open two facing windows for fifteen minutes. A single window only stirs the air.
- Shake ODORGO Odor Eliminator Spray 250 ml well and mist curtains, sofa and cushions lightly; let it dry.
- Open ODORGO Odor Eliminator Gel 250 g and set it in the kitchen standing flat. On its side, the little liquid on top runs out.
- Check again in the morning; odor can rise as the room warms.
The spray is water-based; you can use it on any surface that water does not harm. On water-sensitive fabrics and surfaces (unfinished or untreated wood, silk, leather, electronics, etc.), test on a small hidden area first.
What about hands, boards and the fridge?
Soap sits on the basic side too, so rub your hands with lemon or vinegar first, then wash. Scrub a wooden board with coarse salt and half a lemon and dry it well.
If the fish waited in the fridge, wash the shelf and wipe the door gasket. For spoiled fish, see spoiled food smell in a broken fridge. Everyday fridge odor has its own guide.
Lemon, vinegar, baking soda, coffee: which one works?
| What people try | What it does | Where it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Lemon, vinegar | Acid; binds a basic odor where it touches | Hands, cutting board, pots |
| Baking soda | A base; works on acidic odors | Limited on fish smell |
| Coffee grounds, a bowl of vinegar | Pull your attention to another smell | Nowhere |
| Boiled cinnamon or cloves, room spray | Add another smell on top | Mask; the odor returns |
| Odor eliminator | Binds the molecule and neutralizes it | Fabric, carpet, countertop |
The terms are in our Odor Glossary.
What does ODORGO do to fish smell?
ODORGO is a water-based formula built on five plant-derived essential oils: pine needle, anise, clove, cedarwood and lime. It binds to the odor molecule and does not mask it. In independent laboratory tests the spray and the gel showed up to 98% odor elimination effectiveness. It is not a perfume and leaves no lasting scent.

My mother-in-law came that Saturday. We had coffee in the living room, and fish never came up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does vanilla get rid of fish smell?
No. Boiling vanilla or cinnamon adds a stronger smell on top; when it fades, the fish smell is still there.
How do you get rid of fish smell in the oven?
Wipe the spattered oil off the cooled oven walls, then wash the tray and racks with hot water.
Can I get fish smell out of curtains without washing them?
Yes. Mist the hanging curtain with ODORGO Odor Eliminator Spray from 25-30 cm and open the window.
How many days does fish smell take to go away by itself?
With airing alone it weakens over three to seven days; what stays in fabric returns as the room warms.
Can I use ODORGO spray on the countertop and near food?
Not directly onto food. Put the food away, then apply to the wiped surface.
Can I use it with a cat or dog at home?
Yes. Keep the animal out of the room until the surface is dry. For pet areas there is ODORGO Pet Odor Eliminator Spray 250 ml.
