Last week a reader asked us this: “We were on vacation. When we got back, the fridge wasn't running; a fuse must have blown while we were away. Meat, fish, milk, everything had gone bad. I threw it all out and cleaned the fridge, but the smell is still there. What should I do?”
I understand this question well. I lived for years as someone sensitive to heavy chemical scents, and my story of bringing ODORGO to Turkey began there. Here is the long answer, in order.
Why is the smell so stubborn after a fridge breaks down?
This is usually not your fault: an appliance fails, or a fuse blows while you are away. Spoiled food releases liquid that seeps between the shelves, into the rubber door gaskets and onto the plastic. Meat, fish and milk give off the most stubborn odor molecules as they go bad. You take the food out; the source of the odor stays stuck to the surfaces.
What order should you follow?
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Remove the source | Empty the fridge, pull out shelves and drawers | The odor feeds on what is left inside |
| 2. Wash | Warm soapy water, then dry fully | Takes off grease and residue, not yet the odor |
| 3. Neutralize | Multi-Purpose Liquid on a damp cloth | Takes odor molecules off the surface |
| 4. Keep it from returning | An open gel standing flat inside | Plastic and gaskets release odor for days |
How do you clean out a fridge after food has spoiled?
- Empty the fridge. Take out anything you are not sure is still fresh.
- Carry the spoiled food straight to the outdoor trash can, not to the kitchen trash.
- Remove every shelf, drawer and glass panel that comes out. Wash them in warm soapy water, rinse, and let them dry fully.
- Wipe the interior with warm soapy water: walls, floor, ceiling and, above all, the folds of the door gaskets.
- Wash the drip channel under the shelf where the meat sat and clear the drain hole. The odor often hides there.
How do you neutralize the odor that is left?
ODORGO Multi-Purpose Odor Eliminator Liquid 500 ml is twice as concentrated as standard ODORGO, which is why I recommend it for heavy odor that has worked into a surface. Put a few drops on a damp cloth and wipe all the interior surfaces, the shelves, the drawers and the door gaskets. Where the odor has settled in, go over the spot a second time. If the freezer picked up the smell, empty it and wipe it too.
It takes the odor molecule off the surface and puts no perfume on top. The liquid is water-based; on water-sensitive surfaces (unfinished or untreated wood, electronics), test on a small hidden area first.
Why isn't wiping enough?
Most people stop at step three, and the smell returns a few days later. Odor molecules work into the pores of the plastic and the gaskets, then come back out slowly for days.
This is where ODORGO Odor Eliminator Gel 250 g comes in. After cleaning, open a jar and stand it flat in a corner of the fridge. It catches and neutralizes the leftover odor as it seeps out of the plastic. Wiping takes care of today; the gel takes care of the days after. No outlet, no battery, no filter to change. It is used for up to 30 days in enclosed areas of up to 15 m². It passes no scent to your food either; it carries only the faint scent of its plant oils.
I have made this a habit at home. There is always an open ODORGO gel in a corner of my fridge, so if an accident like this happens while we are away, the fridge already has a head start.
How does ODORGO deal with the odor?
Plant-derived essential oils (pine needle, anise, clove, cedarwood and lime) draw the odor molecule in, bind it, and turn it into a non-volatile, odorless compound. The technology is rooted in research at Delaware State University in the USA. Both the spray and the gel reach up to 98% odor elimination effectiveness. The formula is vegan.
The fragrance-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, dye-free, sulfate-free, and alcohol-free claims are verified by tests conducted at laboratories accredited by TÜRKAK (Turkish Accreditation Agency) and ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation).
How do you keep it from happening again?
- Put raw meat, fish and milk away as soon as you are home from shopping, and freeze what you will not eat soon.
- Wipe up spills right away.
- Before a long trip, eat or clear out the food that spoils fast. Our pre-trip checklist covers the rest of the house.
- In a long power outage, open the fridge door as little as you can.

Frequently Asked Questions
My fridge smells like something died in it. How do I get rid of it?
A plain wipe will not do it. Follow the four steps in order: remove the source, wash, wipe with ODORGO, then leave a gel inside.
Will ODORGO damage the plastic interior or the door gaskets?
No. It is water-based and is used on plastic surfaces and rubber gaskets.
Will the smell come back after it is gone?
Not if the source has been cleaned out in full. If it does return, a missed spot (behind a gasket, under a drawer) is still feeding it; find that spot and repeat.
Multi-Purpose Liquid or spray: which one should I buy?
For a broken-fridge case, the Multi-Purpose Liquid. It is twice as concentrated and suits wiping with a cloth; the standard spray is the handy one for light, everyday room odors.
Does this method work for a mini fridge or a hotel-room fridge?
Yes. Odor builds faster in a small fridge, and the same order works there too.
