That one quick cigarette between meetings, or the last one lit in traffic on the way home. Fine while it lasts. Afterward the stale smell grabs you by the collar.
Throwing the windows open in a panic, the jacket that reeks of smoke when you take it out of the closet in the morning, your spouse making a face the second you walk in. Sound familiar? For years I told myself, “I'll open a window, spray something on top, done.” It doesn't go away.

Why does cigarette odor cling to everything?
We think smoke drifts off. It doesn't. The tar and nicotine in it are oily and sticky, and they latch onto whatever is near: your hair, your coat, the car's headliner, the living room curtains.
Hours after you have aired the room, the oily particles in the fabric are still giving off odor. People call this third-hand smoke. Opening a window does not remove it; it only moves it around for a while.
What covers cigarette odor, and what removes it?
At first I did what everyone does. I bought the heaviest, most floral room spray in the store and emptied it into the room. The result was a room that smelled like a perfumed ashtray.
Baking soda or boiling vinegar may soften the air a little, but they cannot pull out what has worked into the fabric.
How does ODORGO work on smoke odor?
This is where I met ODORGO. The plant-derived essential oils (pine needle, anise, clove, cedarwood and lime) in its water-based formula attract the tobacco odor molecule, bind it and neutralize it. I use it when there are guests, children or pets in the house.
The fragrance-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, dye-free, sulfate-free, and alcohol-free claims are verified by tests conducted at laboratories accredited by TÜRKAK (Turkish Accreditation Agency) and ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation). For the spray and the gel, the figure is up to 98% odor elimination effectiveness.
How do you get cigarette odor out of your home?
I am not a man who spends hours on deep cleaning. My routine:
- The evening coat rescue. When I get home I hang up the smoky coat, shake the ODORGO Odor Eliminator Spray 250 ml bottle well and give the coat two sprays. It does not stain the fabric, and in the morning the coat does not smell of stale tobacco.
- Before a meeting. There is always an ODORGO Pocket Odor Eliminator Spray 30 ml in my bag and in the glove box. One spray on my jacket takes away that “he just had a cigarette” impression.
- Zero effort at home. I opened an ODORGO Odor Eliminator Gel 250 g and left it standing flat in the corner where the odor collects. One jar per 15 m² (about 160 sq ft) does it. To try a smaller size first, there is ODORGO Odor Eliminator Gel 100 g (Compact).
- When the odor builds up. Some evenings I light the ODORGO Odor Eliminating Soy Candle 230 g. On the first burn let the surface melt edge to edge, never burn it for more than 4 hours at a time, trim the wick to 5 mm, and never leave it unattended.
- The car. I spray the headliner and the floor mats; a gel goes in only while the car is parked, standing flat. More in how to get rid of lingering cigarette odors in your home or car.
The spray is water-based; you can use it on any surface that water does not harm. On water-sensitive fabrics and surfaces (unfinished or untreated wood, silk, leather, electronics, etc.), test on a small hidden area first.
Which product goes where?
| Product | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| Spray 250 ml | Coats, curtains, sofa, carpet, the air | Shake well, spray, let it dry |
| Pocket Spray 30 ml | Bag, glove box | A spray on your clothes before a meeting |
| Gel 250 g | The room where people smoke | Lid open, flat and still; up to 30 days in enclosed areas of up to 15 m² |
| Soy Candle 230 g | Living room | No more than 4 hours at a time |
What should you do in a room where people smoke?
- Cross-ventilate. Two windows, or a window and the door, opened together clear the smoke in 10 to 15 minutes.
- Wipe the hard surfaces (table, glass, door handles) with warm soapy water.
- Empty and wash the ashtray every day. The most stubborn odor spreads from there.
- Wash the curtains.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't a regular room spray get rid of cigarette odor?
Because it only lays perfume over it. The tar stays in the sofa and the curtains, so the odor returns when the perfume fades.
Can I get smoke odor out of clothes without washing them?
Yes. Hang the garment up and spray it with ODORGO Odor Eliminator Spray; it leaves no stain.
Does ODORGO work on set-in cigarette odor in a car?
Yes. Spray the headliner and the floor mats, and stand a gel flat in the car only while it is parked.
What scent removes cigarette odor?
None. Lavender, vanilla or coffee covers it for half an hour, then the tobacco smell is back.
Do bowls of vinegar or baking soda work?
Only partly. Both take some of the odor out of the air but cannot lift tar from fabric, and vinegar leaves its own smell in the room.
