Food and Animal Production Facilities
Controlling odor at the source, without masking it
In food and animal production facilities, odor is a natural by-product of production: the breakdown of animal and plant matter, protein and fat leaves a lasting trace in the air and on surfaces. ODORGO does not cover these odor molecules with perfume; its plant-derived active molecules attract them, bind them and neutralize them. The result is not "another smell" added to the facility, but the removal of the odor that is already there.
This needs to be said just as clearly: ODORGO is not a disinfectant. It does not kill germs, it does not sterilize, and it does not take the place of a hygiene certificate. It has one function: odor management.
A Clear Boundary
Four points to settle in the first conversation with facility management:
- ODORGO is an odor eliminator. It is not a disinfectant. It carries no microbiological control, sanitation or hygiene claim.
- It is not designed for food contact. It has no "food contact / food-grade" certificate; it is not applied directly to food, to the inner surface of packaging or to food-contact surfaces. On lines where exposed product is present, it can be used only at points that are at a distance and where the spray is not directed toward the product (see the Caution section).
- It does not replace the sanitation protocol under Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) or Good Hygiene Practices (GHP). It does not interfere with slaughter, processing or cleaning-and-disinfection steps; it is added to the facility's existing sanitation program as an additional ambient layer.
- It does not affect or measure the microbiological criteria of the slaughter/processing line (surface/air counts, pathogen testing). Those measurements are a matter for laboratory analysis; ODORGO's action is limited to odor perception and odor concentration.
Source map
In food and animal production facilities, odor comes from eight or nine different points; each one calls for its own intensity and timing:
- Slaughterhouse and cutting plant (abattoir): blood, offal and intestine cleaning lines
- Poultry slaughter and cutting plant: feather, offal and by-product lines
- Live poultry houses (farm): manure, ammonia load. For suitability in open/semi-open areas, see the note under Technical specifications
- Cutting and cold-chain preparation lines: bone/fat separation, and the biological odor that builds up in pre-packaging chilling areas
- Milk / dairy plants: whey tanks, waste milk lines
- Seafood / fish processing: fishmeal production, storage of seafood waste
- Rendering / by-product melting plants: fat, bone and offal melting vessels
- Feed production plants: protein and bone meal dust, silage odor
- Wastewater pre-treatment units: in-plant pre-treatment, holding tanks (see the Wastewater Treatment Plants page: the same mechanism, for treatment outside the facility)
- Solid food and animal waste and container areas: loading docks, waste collection points
- Staff welfare areas: changing rooms, showers, toilet blocks
- In front of cold storage: biological odor that builds up at door passages
Why is ventilation not enough on its own?
In food facilities, odor molecules do not just stay suspended in the air; they settle into textiles, stainless steel surfaces, concrete floors and walls. High humidity and a constant biological load speed up this buildup. Central ventilation and the existing air change rate cannot clear this load fast enough while production is running, especially in areas that generate odor without interruption, such as slaughter lines, offal separation sections and rendering units. Action at the molecular level comes in as a complement to ventilation, not a replacement for it.
Caution: the sequencing rule
ODORGO is not applied at the same time as an active sanitation (clean-in-place, CIP) process.
- Sanitation/disinfection must be finished, the contact time must have elapsed and the surface must be dry. Only then is ODORGO applied.
- It is not mixed with hypochlorite (chlorine-based) or peracetic acid, and it is not applied at the same time as them.
- PRO Spray is used at points that are visually separate from the zone where exposed product is present and where the spray is not directed toward the product (base of a wall, door entrance, above a drain channel); it is not applied on the line or directly above or beside exposed product. It is not sprayed directly onto packaging material or food-contact surfaces.
- Fogging with DECON DUO is done while the space is empty; a slaughter line or processing area is not put under device-based application while staff are present.
Mechanism
- Adsorption and absorption. On contact with an odor molecule, the plant-derived active molecules draw it to their surface.
- Phase change (reversible). The molecule enters a temporary intermediate form structurally.
- Chemical conversion (pH dependent, range 5–8). The odor molecule is neutralized at the source; it is not covered with perfume.
- The residue stays on the surface and is removed by the facility's routine cleaning program; no separate rinsing step is needed.
Food safety note
Odor can be an early sign of a sanitation or maintenance gap in a facility, but it is not a diagnostic tool. The hierarchy is clear: sanitation/CIP protocol → waste and by-product management → ambient odor layer. ODORGO works only in the third layer; it does not replace the HACCP plan, the GHP procedure or the quality control laboratory. Subject to the risk assessment and approval of the facility's own HACCP team, ODORGO can be added to the food safety management system as a Prerequisite Program (PRP) element. That decision and the final content of the plan belong to the facility's own food safety team; ODORGO does not guarantee this integration.
What it means for each department
| Stakeholder | Question | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Food Safety / Quality Assurance (HACCP) Officer | Does it interfere with the sanitation protocol? | No; it is a separate ambient layer. It carries no food-contact declaration and makes no microbiological claim. Application is scheduled after CIP/sanitation is finished and the surface is dry. |
| Technical Service / Maintenance | What does installation and operation require? | The gel needs no electricity; it is a passive placement. DECON DUO requires a standard outlet (230V/50Hz) and fire alarm integration. For dusty/high-humidity open areas (barn, inside a poultry house), device suitability is settled by an on-site technical assessment; in enclosed, climate-controlled volumes it is positioned directly. |
| Purchasing | How do single-supplier status, budget class and reordering work? | Trigonium İlaç A.Ş.; classed under cleaning/consumable supplies. |
Three-layer placement
| Layer | Product | Function | When Applied | With Staff/Production Present? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base layer | ODORGO Gel | Passive diffusion; 1 unit per 15 m² | Continuous | Yes; placed at points out of reach |
| Peak response | ODORGO PRO Spray 500ml | Fast, manual response at acute odor points | During the shift, when needed | Yes; at points that are at a distance from exposed product and where the spray is not directed toward it (base of a wall, door entrance, above a drain channel) |
| Point source: drain/manhole | ODORGO Maintenance Manhole Gel Insert | The gel inside a perforated insert neutralizes, at the source, the gas escaping from the manhole/drain cover | Continuous, around the clock | Yes; does not block airflow |
| Heavy remediation | DECON DUO (dry vapor + fogging) | Deep treatment in an enclosed volume of 280–300 m³ | End of shift, production break, while the space is empty | No. The area is cleared during fogging |
For large open areas, the atomization method: In areas that exceed room scale, such as an enclosed slaughterhouse yard, the surroundings of an open poultry house or a large loading dock, ODORGO can be mixed with water and sprayed over a wide area with nozzle/fan systems. This method is intended for open/semi-open, large-volume areas beyond the enclosed-room scale of DECON DUO; equipment selection and layout are settled after an on-site technical assessment.
Fire detection protocol
If the facility has a fire detection system (standard in most enclosed food facilities), four steps are followed before fogging with DECON DUO:
- Identify the detector type in the zone that will be affected.
- Test the first application in an empty area, with technical staff standing by at the control panel.
- Isolate the zone during routine application; keep a record of the timing.
- Device-based application is not carried out in areas with aspirating (air-sampling) detection systems.
Dose adjustment rule
The "ideal point": The point where neither the bad odor nor ODORGO's own plant-oil scent can be noticed. A new staff member or shift supervisor enters the area and makes the assessment; the setting is recorded as the standard for that type of space.
| Situation | Reading | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Bad odor is still noticeable | Molecule release is too low | Add gel units; extend the device run time |
| ODORGO scent is noticeable | Dose is too high | Reduce units/release |
| Neutral environment | Correct setting | Recorded as the standard for similar areas |
Hazard information and composition
Composition: A water-based formula with plant-derived essential oils (lemon, pine, cedar, anise, clove + a special blend). It contains no added perfume, phthalates, parabens, dyes, sulfates or alcohol.
Hazard classification: Under KKDİK (the Turkish regulation on the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals), it is not classified as hazardous. It has no flash point (not flammable). The d-limonene content is <0.3% in the spray and <0.2% in the gel, a low concentration. The pH range is 5–8 (PRO) / 5–7 (gel). In normal use, personal protective equipment is not required; evacuation during application is not required (except for DECON DUO fogging, which is run while the space is empty).
Certification: At an independent accredited laboratory (TÜRKAK, the Turkish Accreditation Agency, recognized under the ILAC-MRA, the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation Mutual Recognition Arrangement), it has been verified as certified vegan; it is reported to contain no perfume, phthalates, parabens, dyes, sulfates or alcohol.
Food-contact declaration: ODORGO is not designed for direct contact with food; it has no "food contact / food-grade" certificate. According to the manufacturer's declaration, no toxins or harsh chemicals are used in the formula, and it is biodegradable; the composition and vegan analysis are documented separately at an independent TÜRKAK-accredited laboratory. Subject to the risk assessment and approval of the facility's own HACCP team, ODORGO can be added to the food safety management system as a Prerequisite Program (PRP) element; that decision and the final content of the plan belong to the facility's own food safety team.

Frequently asked questions
Does it come into contact with food?
No. ODORGO is not designed for direct contact with food and has no "food contact / food-grade" certificate. It is not applied directly to packaging material or food-contact surfaces; on lines where exposed product is present, it is used only at points that are at a distance and where the spray is not directed toward the product.
How is it integrated into our HACCP plan?
Not as a critical control point (CCP). Subject to the risk assessment and approval of the facility's own HACCP team, it can be added to the food safety management system as a Prerequisite Program (PRP) element. That decision and the final content of the plan belong to the facility's own food safety team; KKDİK documents and TÜRKAK-accredited analysis reports are prepared for your committee file.
Is it applied while the slaughter/processing line is running?
The gel works continuously, at points out of reach. PRO Spray can be used at points that are visually separate from the zone where exposed product is present and where the spray is not directed toward the product (base of a wall, door entrance, above a drain channel); it is not applied on the line or directly above or beside exposed product. Fogging with DECON DUO is done only while the space is empty, at the end of a shift or during a production break.
Can it be used in a poultry house or a barn?
In enclosed, climate-controlled administrative/processing areas it is positioned directly. For open or semi-open shelter areas, device suitability requires an on-site technical assessment (see the note under Technical specifications).
Does the product have allergen and food safety documents?
Independent TÜRKAK-accredited laboratory reports (showing it contains no perfume, phthalates, parabens, dyes, sulfates or alcohol), the vegan certificate and the KKDİK compliance declaration are shared on request.
What solves the odor at manhole and drain covers?
The ODORGO Maintenance Manhole Gel Insert uses gel placed inside a perforated insert to neutralize, at the source, the gas escaping from the manhole/drain cover; it works around the clock without blocking airflow and is renewed every 3–5 weeks on average. It is suited to the drain points of slaughterhouses, dairies and rendering plants.
