Elif Sarıkaya · Mother of three, a scent-sensitive homeowner · Last updated: October 5, 2026
I am a mother of three and far too sensitive to smells; because of my migraines I cannot go near heavily scented sprays anyway. In the first heat wave of July I switched on the living room air conditioner for the first time that season, and the house filled with a smell like a basement.
The reflex is predictable: first the window, then the room spray. Ten minutes later the smell was back, mixed with perfume and worse.
Why does an air conditioner smell?
While the unit cools, the coil in the indoor unit (the evaporator) is constantly wet, and dust from the air sticks to it. Moisture, dust and darkness suit mold and bacteria. They grow while the unit is off, and when you switch it on the fan blows the built-up odor straight into the room. A wet-earth, basement smell points to mold.
- Dirty filter: the easiest cause to fix.
- Mold on the coil and fan wheel, behind the filter. If the smell comes back every time, this is the real source.
- Drain line: condensed water that does not drain sits in the pipe and smells sour.
Which fix fits which situation?
| Situation | What to do | ODORGO product |
|---|---|---|
| Musty smell spreads when the unit starts | Clean the filters and clear the odor in the air | Spray 250 ml |
| The smell returns every time | Coil and drain cleaning by a technician, plus a gel in the room | Gel 250 g |
| Odor has settled into curtains, sofa, carpet | Spray the fabrics directly | Spray 250 ml |
| Odor from the car air conditioner | Change the cabin filter and treat the interior | Pocket Spray 30 ml |
Why are room sprays and scented products not enough?
A perfumed room spray puts a second smell on top of the musty odor; the odor molecules are still in the air. As someone with migraines I will add this: musty odor mixed with heavy perfume is harder to bear than musty odor alone.
How do you remove air conditioner odor step by step?
- Wash the filters. Unplug the unit, lift the front cover and take the filters out. Wash them in lukewarm water and dry them fully in the shade. Repeat every 2-3 weeks in summer.
- Make drying the coil a habit. Before switching off, run the unit in fan-only mode for 20-30 minutes; a dry coil leaves mold without the moisture it needs.
- If the smell comes every time, hand it to a technician. Have an authorized service clean the indoor unit and drain once a year. Do not spray any liquid into the unit yourself, ODORGO included.
- Clear the odor that has settled in the room. Shake ODORGO Odor Eliminator Spray 250 ml well and spray the air, curtains, sofa and carpet. For heavy odor worked into a carpet, ODORGO Multi-Purpose Odor Eliminator Liquid 500 ml is the more concentrated option: 50 mL in a carpet and upholstery washing machine.
- Leave an ODORGO Odor Eliminator Gel 250 g in the room where the unit is.
The spray is water-based; you can use it on any surface that water does not harm. On water-sensitive fabrics and surfaces (unfinished or untreated wood, silk, leather, electronics, etc.), test on a small hidden area first.
Why do I use ODORGO for the air in the room?
It does not work by masking. Its water-based formula built on plant-derived essential oils (pine needle, anise, clove, cedarwood and lime) first attracts the odor molecules that come from mold, then binds them and turns them into odorless compounds. It is technology rooted in research at Delaware State University in the USA. It is fragrance-free, which matters to me since heavy scents set off my migraines, and it can be used in homes with children and pets.
How does the gel keep the room fresh all summer?
The air conditioner runs every day until summer ends, and I did not want to be spraying every day. The gel is passive: I open the lid and set it somewhere flat and still, with no outlet or batteries. In enclosed areas of up to 15 m² it is used for up to 30 days. In a bedroom where the unit runs at night, having no sound and no light is a comfort of its own.
For the root of a damp smell in the house, see the musty odor guide; for the car there is our car odor guide.
I washed the filter, made fan mode a habit and put a gel in the room; since that day I have not winced when switching the unit on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a bad smell come from the air conditioner?
The coil in the indoor unit gets wet during cooling and dust sticks to it; mold and bacteria grow on that damp surface and the fan blows the odor into the room.
Can I spray inside the air conditioner?
No. Do not spray anything, ODORGO included, into the indoor unit, onto the coil or onto the electronics; ODORGO is applied to the room air and to fabrics.
How do I get rid of air conditioner odor at home?
Wash the filters, dry the coil in fan mode before switching off, and use ODORGO Odor Eliminator Spray on the odor in the room.
Does air conditioner odor settle into curtains and sofas?
Yes. The unit passes the same air over the fabrics for weeks, so cleaning the unit alone is not enough.
What about odor from the car air conditioner?
Change the cabin filter and run the fan for a few minutes before turning the system off. For the interior, use ODORGO Pocket Odor Eliminator Spray 30 ml, which you can carry in your bag.
