The dog came home. Nobody slept the first night, one slipper went missing on day two, and on day three there was a small wet spot in the living room.
A week later a guest visits and says, politely, "it smells like dog in here." You don't notice it; a nose gets used to its own home fast. Getting odor out later is hard, keeping it from settling in is easy. This post is about the second one.
Why does dog odor settle into a home so fast?
A dog's skin makes oil all the time. The oil gets onto the fur, and the fur onto every fabric it touches: the arm of the sofa, the sunny corner of the carpet, your pillow. Add the wet-dog smell after a rainy walk and the accidents of house-training.
Detergent takes the dirt, and its perfume covers the odor for a while. The odor molecule inside the fiber stays put, so the same smell is back a few days later.
Which habits should you build in the first week?
- Draw the line on day one. If you want the bedroom to stay odor-free, keep the dog out from the start; setting a rule later is harder.
- Put a cover on the dog bed and wash the cover once a week. Add one capful of ODORGO Multi-Purpose Odor Eliminator Liquid 500 ml to the detergent drawer.

What do you do when a puppy pees on the carpet?
It will happen, so don't get angry. Until house-training is done, accidents are part of the deal. Urine is the most stubborn of dog odors; the longer it waits, the deeper it sinks under the carpet.
- Blot up the wetness with a dry cloth or paper towel. Don't rub; rubbing spreads the stain.
- Spray Pet Spray on the stain and a little around it.
- Let it dry. If you can still smell it, spray once more.

How do you cut down dog odor in the car?
A car is a small, closed space; two trips to the vet are enough for the seat to smell like dog. Lay a cover over the seat and wash it together with the bed cover. After every trip, spray the seat and the trunk floor and leave the windows open a little.

Do baths and grooming reduce the odor?
They do, but bathing more often can backfire; skin that is washed too often makes more oil. Ask your vet how often to bathe. Brushing, though, does no harm even every day.
