How do you get rid of a musty damp smell?

Order matters. First find the moisture source: a leak, poor ventilation or condensation. Second, if there is visible mould, clean the surface physically with a suitable cleaning product and dry the area completely. Third, treat the odour that remains in textiles, timber and cardboard: spray the surfaces and leave a gel working in the room. Without fixing the moisture source no treatment lasts — the smell returns within days.

Why does the damp smell never fully go away?

Musty odour is stored in porous materials: carpet backing, timber shelving, cardboard boxes, paint and textiles. These hold the odour molecule even after they dry, and release it again whenever humidity rises. Removing stored cardboard, washing textiles and keeping a gel working in the space breaks the cycle.
